WITH DANCE, FANFARE
11th September

The Balinese consider the first monsoon rains of the season as a good omen and they did nothing to dampen spirits at today's launch of the Kuta Karnival at Kuta Beach's Surf Lifesaving Headquarters. Miraculously at 3pm sharp the rains stopped in order that the ceremony could start on time!
Dignitaries, tourists, local and international media turned out to mark the start of the month-long event.

The Governor of Bali led a minutes silence in respect of those lost in the WTC tragedy two years ago.

|
Opening events featured Barongsai dance entertainment from Kuta; an especially choreographed kecak dance with episodes from the Ramayana legend and Legong dancers, from Sukawati.
|

Of great interest to the spectators was the release of two mature and dozens of hatchling green turtles into the Indian Ocean. |

|
Assisting with the release were government officials, Kuta Karnival committee members and Bali consular representatives; from Italy, Pino Confessa, for Austria-Switzerland Jon Zurcher and for the United Kingdom Mark Wilson
